Minor Roof Damage

A simple crack, a small leak, and minor roof damage can still bring major consequences if left unattended. Emergency roof repair can be done in order to prevent the problem from spreading. Although it does not necessarily fix the problem permanently, it at least buys you some time to contact a professional roofer.

Start from checking the problem inside the house. You should identify which parts of the house are affected by a roof leak. This can help you estimate how big the affected area is and how much roof repair is required. Watermarks in the ceiling don’t necessarily say the problem is right above it, though. If the roof is built at a higher angle, the crack may be found on a different location.

Once you have identified the areas for roof repair, you then need to find out if this problem is caused by weather conditions or the roof structure itself. If the roof is built sturdily, but the materials used cannot withstand its environment (strong winds, storms or hail), this would still cause you some serious roof problems in the long run. If it were caused by a poorly designed roof structure, it would be best to contact your contractor immediately and raise those issues for a permanent fix.

Aside from taking into consideration what had caused the roof damage, you also need to consider what type of roof you are dealing with. Roof repair for cedar shingles won’t necessarily apply if you’re dealing with asphalt shingles. It is best to check all the materials and tools needed to fix the job.

For example, in dealing with wooden shake roofs, you need a hammer and chisel to detach the broken shake from the area and a hacksaw to cut off the old nail heads that are protruding. Once done, replace the broken shake with a new one, making sure that its size is smaller than the previous one so as to provide a small space for the shake to swell in.

For shingle roofs, you may just need to flatten out any curled shingles back to its place with a hammer. There are also cases when you have to warm the shingles up with a torch before you can flatten them because they have stiffened up due to cold climate. Roof repair for flashing between roof pitches or valleys and drainpipes require you to scrape it first with a wire brush before applying generous amounts of roof cement to seal those gaps and cracks completely.

These simple applications in roof repair should be considered as a quick fix for those small roof problems. This will at least give you an idea where and how to deal with it. If you found out that the affected area is bigger than you have thought, consulting a professional roofer for a permanent solution would still be the best approach in dealing with these roof problems.

Are you obsessed with storms?

Are you obsessed with storms?

Nature can be so amazing at times. The lights, sound and pounding rain of a good storm not only brings needed water to our lands, but fills that desire in people to get as close to nature as possible and see what it has to offer.

One thing you are probably not noticing when a storm hits is all the people who come out to see it. Of course, protected by their garage roof, but hardly protected at all. The urge to see what happening and the smell of the rain has such a hold on some they just can’t resist going outside. Why do we put our lives in danger to see the storm?

A storm took a town in Minnesota by surprise last week. Two minutes after the sirens went off a tornado touched down. Two minutes, that’s all! Many people on the news said they heard the sirens but went outside to see what was going on. Luckily no one was hurt by this tornado.

Why go outside to see, why not take cover? Are we immune to the sirens? Do we not believe there is immediate danger?

Never thought of using that…

Drain Cleaner-
Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the sink. Then add at least a cup of vinegar. It will start to fizz. Rinse with boiling water and salt. You may need to do this a few times, depending if you are trying to unclog or just clean up.

All Purpose Surface Cleaner-
Mix together equal parts salt and white vinegar.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner-
Sprinkle baking soda and vinegar in the toilet bowl, let it sit for a few minutes then scrub with the toilet brush.

Oven Cleaner-
Mix baking soda and water into a paste. Apply to oven once you have wiped up all the grease and loose food. Let sit for a few minutes and then scrub.

Window Cleaner-
3 tbs vinegar to 1 qt water. You can buy spray bottles at dollar stores or just recycle your old one.

Disinfectant-
3 tbs. liquid soap, 2 cups water and 30 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties.

Tub/Shower/Tile Cleaner-
1 2/3 cups baking soda
½ cup liquid soap
½ cup water
2 tbs vinegar (add last)

Dishwasher agent
Sprinkle your dishes with baking soda. You will need less dishwasher detergent.

Floor Cleaners (vinyl type floors)-
1 cup vinegar
1 gallon warm water

Carpet deodorizer-
Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet then vacuum.

Hand Moisturizer-
Warm a small bowl of olive oil, soak hands. If necessary add sugar to exfoliate.
